What mixes with 2A?

2A is E♭ minor (D♯ minor). In Open Key notation it is 7m. These are the keys that sit well after it, from the safest move to the boldest.

Stay put

2A E♭m

Another track in the same key. Nothing can clash. The only risk is that an hour of one key starts to sound flat.

Perfect — one step round

1A A♭m  ·  3A B♭m

The neighbours on the wheel. Six of the seven notes are shared with 2A, so a long blend holds together. This is the move to reach for when you want the change to go unnoticed.

Fuzzy — change of mode

2B F♯  ·  1B B  ·  3B D♭

2B is the relative major: the same seven notes as 2A with a different home note, so the mood turns without anything going sour. 1B and 3B are a step round as well as a change of mode. They usually work; listen to how the bass lines sit before you commit.

Boost — two or three steps up

4A Fm  ·  5A Cm

An audible lift. Fewer notes are shared, so mix it quickly or bring it in over a breakdown rather than riding a long blend.

Drop — two or three steps down

12A D♭m  ·  11A F♯m

The same distance the other way. It takes the tension out of a room, which is useful after a peak and unhelpful before one.

Mood — four steps

6A Gm

A deliberate change of colour. Treat it as the start of a new chapter, not a blend.

A safe route out of 2A

2A → 3A → 3B → 4B → 4A

Every step there is either one place round the wheel or a switch between minor and major, so each change shares most of its notes with the one before. Five tracks later you are two positions on and nobody heard a join.

Everything else

Any key not listed above is a long way from 2A. That does not make it forbidden. It means the two tracks should not be heard together for long: cut, use a breakdown, or put a track from the lists above between them.

See it as a picture on the Mixkey wheel, or read harmonic mixing in plain words.
